How Amazon FBA fees work
Amazon deducts three types of fees from every FBA sale. Understanding each one helps you price products for sustainable margins.
Referral Fee
Amazon charges a percentage of your selling price as a referral fee, ranging from 8% (Electronics, Grocery) to 17% (Clothing). This is paid on every sale regardless of fulfillment method.
FBA Fulfillment Fee
A per-unit fee covering pick, pack, and shipping. It depends on your item's size tier (Small Standard vs. Large Standard) and weight. Ranges from $3.06 to $6.10+ for standard-size items.
Monthly Storage Fee
Charged per cubic foot of space your inventory occupies in Amazon's fulfillment centers. $0.78/cu ft (Jan–Sep) and $2.40/cu ft (Oct–Dec). Keeping lean inventory reduces this cost significantly.
Size Tier
Amazon classifies products as Small Standard (longest side ≤15", median ≤12", shortest ≤0.75", ≤16 oz) or Large Standard (up to 18"×14"×8", ≤20 lb). Smaller tiers mean lower fees.

Frequently asked questions
How does Amazon calculate FBA fees?
Amazon charges two main fees per sale: a referral fee (a percentage of the selling price, typically 8–17% depending on category) and an FBA fulfillment fee (a flat per-unit charge based on product size and weight). There is also a monthly storage fee charged per cubic foot of warehouse space used.
What is a good profit margin for Amazon FBA?
Most experienced FBA sellers target a minimum net margin of 20–30% after all Amazon fees, product cost, and shipping. Margins below 15% leave little room for PPC advertising costs, returns, and account fees. Products with 30%+ margins are considered strong candidates.
What is the referral fee on Amazon?
Referral fees range from 8% to 17% of the selling price depending on the product category. Electronics and Grocery items are charged 8%, most categories are 15%, and Clothing & Accessories is 17%. The fee is deducted from each sale automatically.
Does this calculator include Amazon PPC costs?
This calculator covers the core Amazon-charged fees: referral fees, FBA fulfillment fees, and storage fees. It does not include PPC advertising spend, which varies widely by product and keyword. Many sellers add $1–3 per unit in PPC costs when modeling profitability.
What is the difference between Small Standard and Large Standard size tiers?
Small Standard items have a longest side of 15" or less, a median side of 12" or less, a shortest side of 0.75" or less, and weigh 16 oz or less. Items exceeding any of these dimensions fall into Large Standard, which carries higher fulfillment fees starting at $3.77 per unit.
